4 storylines to watch on OK Tire Labour Day Weekend

Buckle up, CFL fans. OK Tire Labour Day Weekend is here.

There's plenty on the line this week, and I'm not just talking about points in the standings.

With the biggest week of games so far this season kicking off on Friday night, here are four storylines to watch.

CLASH OF TWO HOT TEAMS

BC at Montreal Friday, September 4 7:30 p.m. ET TSN, RDS, CFL+

What's better to kick off OK Tire Labour Day Weekend than a clash between a team that has won five games in a row and the club with the league's best record? That's what we're treated to on Friday night as the BC Lions head to Montreal to take on the Alouettes.

Nathan Rourke and his BC Lions have won five straight and have moved to third in the west with a 6-5 record after starting the season 1-5. Their defence has locked in, going from allowing 30.3 points per game through the first six games to 21.8 in their last five. BC has also established a punishing run game, led by Zander Horvath, improving their 74 yards per game on the ground in the first six contests to 183 per game in their last five.

Montreal may have been handed just their second loss of the season last week against Winnipeg, but they still hold the league's best record. Their offence is led by the CFL's leading passer, Davis Alexander, and its top two leading receivers Tyson Philpot and Tyler Snead, and much like BC, Montreal has a bruising running back in Travis Theis.

Which team will get the better of the two this weekend in Alexander and Rourke's first-ever meeting?

BRADY IS HEATING UP DOWN THE FINAL STRETCH

Winnipeg at Saskatchewan Sunday, September 6 7:00 p.m. ET TSN, CBSSN, CFL+

Brady Oliveira only had one game of over 100 yards rushing from Weeks 1-7, and that was in his team's season-opener against Calgary. But since Week 8 hit, he's been on a tear.

The Bombers running back has hit triple digits in four of his last five games, and has scored four of his five touchdowns on the season over that span.

Having Oliveira at his best heading into the opening game of the epic back-to-back series between the Bombers and Riders is good news for Winnipeg fans, especially as we get ready to head down The Final Stretch of the season to the playoffs.

He'll have a tough task this Sunday against a Roughriders defence that allows just 72.5 yards per game on the ground as Oliveira needs just 44 yards to surpass 1,000 for the fifth straight season.

CAN HAMILTON CONTAIN TORONTO'S PASS RUSH?

Toronto at Hamilton Monday, September 7 2:30 p.m. ET TSN, RDS2, CBSSN, CFL+

They say games can be won and lost in the trenches and Monday's Battle of the QEW may come down to just that.

The Toronto Argonauts pass rush has been given a major boost since signing Shawn Lemon earlier this season, and their team has shot to the top of the stats sheet, leading the CFL in sacks (26). Lemon has tallied at least one sack in each of his five games, including three games where he notched a pair.

Hamilton's offensive line has allowed 24 sacks this year, and while the team hasn't announced who is starting at quarterback this week, the unit will still need to keep Toronto at bay and protect their pivot. If it is indeed Tre Ford under centre, his ability to scramble out of the pocket and extend plays may be the secret sauce for Hamilton's success against the Argos front seven.

Given Toronto's ability to get pressure, it could force the Ticats into quick throws and, if it goes the Argos' way, mistakes. Which unit along the line of scrimmage will outmatch the other?

DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS AND... LABOUR DAY GAMES?

Edmonton at Calgary Monday, September 7 6:00 p.m. ET TSN, CBSSN, CFL+

Edmonton's defence has been a major reason for their success so far in 2026.

Not only does the team allow the fewest points per game (25.4), they're also the best team at forcing turnovers (33). Mark Kilam's group has been successful at playing complementary football, with Cody Fajardo and his offence cashing in on those turnovers with 103 points, the most by any club so far this year.

The defensive unit will have its hands full as they head to McMahon to take on the league's top-scoring offence. After missing last week's game against Hamilton, Vernon Adams Jr. is likely to return for the Battle of Alberta, with the Stamps pivot participating fully in practice earlier this week. With VA potentially back in the fold, Calgary will look to build on their 36.9 points scored per game, the most in the CFL.
