How will the playoff picture shake out after Week 21?
Pat Steinberg
Three teams. Two playoff spots. One weekend.
That’s what we’re looking at entering Week 21, the final week of the 2026 season. The Saskatchewan Roughriders have clinched a playoff spot but don’t know where they’re going to finish. And one of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers or Calgary Stampeders will capture the league’s final playoff spot.
One of those three teams will finish third in the West Division and visit the BC Lions in the Western Semi-Final on October 31. One will finish fourth, clinch a crossover playoff spot, and take on the Toronto Argonauts in the Eastern Semi-Final that same day. And one team will not qualify for the postseason.
Here’s everything you need to know.

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (9-8)
WEEK 21: VS. EDMONTON
THE PATHS
West Division playoff spot: Victory vs. Edmonton
Crossover playoff spot: Loss vs. Edmonton
THE DETAILS
Because the Roughriders don’t own the tiebreaker on the two other teams in question, a 9-9 finish will automatically slide them into the crossover position. Knowing they’ll be going on the road against a tough opponent, Saskatchewan is being strategic with their roster entering Saturday afternoon’s game against the Elks.
Jack Coan will make his first CFL start for the Riders with reigning Grey Cup MVP Trevor Harris resting for the season finale. Now in his third year with Saskatchewan, Coan has only two passing attempts this season and 31 total since joining the team in 2024.
On the other side, with the Elks having clinched top spot in the division, quarterback Cody Fajardo is expected to sit in favour of Taylor Powell. Other regulars worth monitoring include Tyrell Ford, Joel Dublanko, Austin Mack, Malik Carney, and Justin Rankin. Those players, among others, have all been limited at practice this week.
WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (8-9)
WEEK 21: AT BC
THE PATHS
West Division playoff spot: Win at BC AND Saskatchewan loss
Crossover playoff spot: Win at BC AND Saskatchewan win
THE DETAILS
Winnipeg’s qualifying situation is clear. If they beat BC on Friday, the Blue Bombers will be headed to the playoffs for a 10th consecutive season. A loss will snap that streak and send Calgary to the postseason instead. That part is cut and dried. Where Winnipeg goes if they win, however, would be determined by the Riders in their game the next day.
With everything on the line, the Bombers won’t be holding back when it comes to roster decisions. The same can’t be said about BC.
Kaidon Salter will get the start at quarterback with Nathan Rourke expected to rest the entire game. And knowing receivers Justin McInnis and Keon Hatcher Sr. both sat during the second half of last week’s game in Calgary, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they’re on a snap count or rested entirely.
CALGARY STAMPEDERS (9-9)
WEEK 21: BYE
THE PATHS
West Division playoff spot: Winnipeg loss, Saskatchewan loss
Crossover playoff spot: Winnipeg loss, Saskatchewan win
THE DETAILS
It’s going to be an anxious Friday night for the Stampeders as their playoff fate rests completely in other hands. Calgary did their part in last week’s season finale, first by hanging with the Lions in the first half. Then, with BC resting numerous starters in the final two quarters, the Stamps completed the job and kept their season alive.
Calgary can be heartened knowing BC has already beaten the Bombers with Salter at the helm. In his first career CFL start in Week 9, Salter threw for 96 yards and a touchdown, added 160 more rushing yards, and even caught an important two-point conversion as part of a 35-19 win.
