Lions sign defensive back Robert Carter Jr.

VANCOUVER -- The BC Lions have signed American defensive back Robert Carter Jr., the team announced on Tuesday.

“As a rookie last year, Rob showed that he’s a consistent playmaker,” said general manager Ryan Rigmaiden.

“Adding a player of his calibre will be a huge boost on the field and in the locker room. The sky is the limit for this player. We expect him to be a cornerstone of our defence for years to come.”

Carter Jr. returns north after appearing in training camp with the Indianapolis Colts. Suiting up in all three preseason contests, the playmaker registered 13 total tackles and one sack that went for an eight-yard loss.

The Virginia native joined the Lions just ahead of 2025 training camp and emerged as one of the team’s most impactful newcomers, registering 51 defensive tackles, a team-high five interceptions and 12 pass knockdowns in 18 regular season contests. One of the takeaways was one the CFL’s most amazing plays in recent memory, a diving end zone grab that saved a touchdown against Hamilton. Another was returned for a touchdown in a victory over Edmonton in October, his first CFL score.

Carter also made a big impact come playoff time, returning a kickoff 95 yards for a major in the Western Semi-Final victory over Calgary.

Carter capped it off by earning the team nomination for CFL Most Outstanding Rookie.
