MOC Watch: Who are the front-runners on OK Tire Labour Day Weekend?

TORONTO – OK Tire Labour Day Weekend has arrived, bringing with it one of the most anticipated slates of games on the CFL calendar.

Three heated rivalries go head-to-head as the Tiger-Cats and Argonauts, Blue Bombers and Roughriders, and Elks and Stampeders meet with more than just two points on the line. The red-hot BC Lions and league-leading Montreal Alouettes also meet on Friday night, adding plenty of intrigue to the opening game of the weekend.

As the calendar flips to September, The Final Stretch to the playoffs begins and players start to separate themselves as front-runners to win hardware at the end of the year.

With that in mind, here are some (notice we said some, and not all) of the top candidates for Most Outstanding Canadian heading into OK Tire Labour Day Weekend.

TYSON PHILPOT | RECEIVER | MONTREAL ALOUETTES

Tyson Philpot has been the most dynamic receiver of 2026, leading the league in receiving yards for almost the entire season. The Canadian was the first pass-catcher to hit 1,000 yards this year and is on pace to break Allen Pitts' single-season receiving yards record.

Heading into OK Tire Labour Day Weekend, Philpot has hauled in 90 catches for 1,316 yards and 10 touchdowns, all of which are leading the CFL. His Alouettes open the slate of games on Friday against the BC Lions.

NATHAN ROURKE | QUARTERBACK | BC LIONS

Speaking of the BC Lions, Nathan Rourke is another front-runner to win Most Outstanding Canadian this season.

The winner of the award in 2025 (as well as the George Reed Most Outstanding Player award), Rourke has completed 71.2 per cent of his passes for 2,784 yards, 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also a threat to use his legs, rushing for 138 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

BRADY OLIVEIRA | RUNNING BACK | WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS

Brady Oliveira has climbed the stats board and, heading into OK Tire Labour Day Weekend, the Bombers running back sits first in the CFL in rushing yards (956). He's averaging 6.2 yards per carry and has totalled 27 rushes of over 10 yards and six of over 20.

Oliveira won the award in 2024, along with being named George Reed Most Outstanding Player that season as well. Will he claim the Most Outstanding Canadian hardware in 2026?

TYRELL FORD | DEFENSIVE BACK | EDMONTON ELKS

Tyrell Ford is tied for the league lead in interceptions (five), putting his ballhawking abilities on full display so far in 2026.

He's a defensive back that any quarterback needs to account for when throwing in his direction. Ford is tied for third in the CFL in knockdowns (six), just two back of the leaders. Ford has never won an end-of-season award, but will 2026 be his first?

MATHIEU BETTS | DEFENSIVE LINE | BC LIONS

BC Lions defensive lineman Mathieu Betts won Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2025 and is making a case for himself to be named this year's top Canadian.

The 31-year-old is known for his quick release off the line and has tallied seven sacks so far this season. Betts makes quarterbacks uncomfortable, even if he isn't recording a sack. According to PFF, Betts is second in the league in generating pressures, with 48 so far this year.
